How do you attach an addition roof to your existing roof?

We get the new roof framed and sheathed. Once that's done we can use a technique called a cut valley to add a little bit of new underlayment to parts of the old roof before adding an additional layer of shingles to join it to the old one.  Then we shingle your new roof.  Our main concern throughout that process is to ensure the existing structure stays watertight while we work.

Is it cheaper to add a home addition up or out?

While building up vs. out might have an effect on your other construction costs, it doesn't matter to the roofing quote. What will affect the roofing quote is the square footage of your addition and the pitch of your new roof.
